Parents, students and the buses:   IMPORTANT MESSAGE

I would like to acknowledge the parents of students at Neilburg Composite School for all of their efforts in maintaining communication with the school and in keeping our students safe.   However, a couple of things have come up recently that are a cause for concern.

Please be sure to stay out of the bus lanes before and after school while the buses are loading and unloading.  Small children cannot be seen when they are around the buses and their movements can be unpredictable, which is why the buses have their stop lights on and their arms out even in the bus lane.  This concern is echoed by the law in Saskatchewan, which states (Section 43, Highway Safety Act, 2006; Section 212, Traffic Safety Act, 2006):

(2) The driver of a vehicle proceeding in the same direction on a highway as a school bus that has its safety lights in operation shall not pass the school bus.

(3) The driver of a vehicle proceeding in the same direction on a highway as a school bus that is stopped and that has its safety lights and stop arm in operation shall stop at least five metres from the rear of the school bus and shall not proceed until the operation of the safety lights and stop arm has been discontinued.

(4) When a school bus is stopped and has its safety lights and stop arm in operation, the driver of a vehicle that is approaching the school bus from the opposite direction on a highway, other than a divided highway, shall stop at least five metres from the front of the school bus and shall not proceed until the operation of the safety lights and stop arm has been discontinued.

(5) Any person who contravenes subsection (2), (3) or (4) is guilty of an offence and liable on summary conviction to a fine of not less than $250 and not more than $1,000.

We have been assured by the RCMP that drivers who ignore either the bus' safety lights or the No Parking signs which are displayed at both ends of the bus lane can be charged.   Up until now, we have relied on conversations with drivers to remind them of this law.  We also put out pylons while the buses are loading and unloading to discourage parents and others from driving in the bus lane at that time.  However we are still having issues.  We do not want to see anyone fined, but our students' safety is paramount.

We have come across another issue in our day-to-day operations.  Although the school truly appreciates being told when a student is not travelling by bus, particularly in the evening, the bus driver needs to know as well.  That way, if a student gets on the bus when they are not supposed to, the driver knows and will not leave the school or home with the child on the bus.  So please, let both the school and the driver know if your child will not be riding on the bus.   This is confirmed by the school division School Bus Safety Handbook for Parents/Guardians which can be found on the division's website.

What parents/guardians should be aware of regarding school bus service:

Provide a written note or phone call to the driver if your child is modifying their normal routine or is not to ride the bus at all  … A confirmed text message to the driver may be suitable.  Thank you very much to your attention to these details.  We fully appreciate your cooperation in these matters.

GRADE 12 DRAKE MEAT FUNDRAISER                                                                                                                     The grade 12 students are doing a Drake Meat Fundraiser.  If you are interested in purchasing something from the variety of meats that they have for sale please contact a grade 12 student of the school at 306-823-4313.  Orders are due by April 10th and expected to be delivered towards the end of April.

PARENT/STUDENT/ TEACHER INTERVIEWS                                                                                                           Our next set of student-parent-teacher conferences are quickly approaching.  The dates are Monday, March 26 and Wednesday, March 28.  The interviews will be running from 4:00-7:00 pm without a break.  This also means that the hours of the BookFair will reflect those of the interviews.  We want to make sure you are aware of the interview date and will be able to find a time that works for you.  Parents of Elementary students who require an interview will be contacted to set up an interview time.  If you don't get a call and would like an interview, please contact the school office at 306-823-4313, to set up a time to meet.  Parents of grade 6-12 students are asked to follow the same format as the fall interviews and meet with the teachers as they become available during the interview sessions.  We look forward to meeting with you.              Note:  Mrs. Knorr-Bingham, Mrs. Heeroma, Mrs. Chapman and Mrs. Snell will only be available for interviews on Monday, March 26.
