September 23, 2019

SCC Meeting: September 10, 2019

Sara called the meeting to order at 12:05pm Members present: Sara Goodfellow, Geoff McFarlan, Harriet Holmedal, Rachel Wightman, Charmaine Graham, Lisa Perkins, Bev Nattress

Minutes: Sara presented the minutes from the last meeting May 10, 2019 and moved to adopt as read; seconded by Bev Nattress. Financial Report: NCS Account: $1353.61 and NWSD Account: $2224.19. Charmaine moved to adopt the financial report; seconded by Harriet Holmedal.

Principal’s Report: Music teachers using rooms in the school to conduct lessons is a problem the school is trying to resolve. For the students’ security, there is a problem with the lessons being held in unsupervised areas and with the music teacher being alone with the student. NCS would like feedback from the SCC on the community’s feelings on the matter and some solutions suggested were a criminal records check, moving the lessons to a more public area, and having a waiver signed. New staff includes Shayla Ross, Brent Plant and Kara McGarry. The shop will be utilized by the students this year and Geoff is looking into a partnership with the 4H members. Lisa Perkins is the In School Learning Coach. Math is a major focus for the elementary as scores are lower than the school would like. Enrollment is up with 187 students. NCS has many students involved in extra-curricular activities and buses may be needed to transport students to events. A sensory floor path is at the elementary end and NCS would like to paint the hallway at the high school end. Swimming lessons for the elementary students are being researched by the school. The track is still under construction. The weeds in the centre need to be removed and grass seed planted. Bev will contact Karrie at the RM office and gather information on where we are with the work. NCS is hosting an anti-bullying seminar on September 17, 2019. Schools attending will be Marsden and Marshall. Grades 4 – 7 will be at the school and Grades 8 – 12 will be at the Neilburg Hall. SCC will organize snacks for the students.

Old Business: By-laws tabled until further notice. Sara will clean out old SCC files. Back to School Event will be planned in April or May so it will be organized for September, 2020.

New Business: Cathy submitted a letter requesting money to help with library renovations to make a Lego wall. Motion made by Charmaine to fund the Lego wall for the library at a cost of $200.00 to $300.00; seconded by Harriet; carried. Motion made by Charmaine to request a quote from Amanda Isaac to construct a shelf for the skylight esthetics project as SCC is willing to spend $300.00 for the shelf and plants for decorating. Bev asked why NCS does not issue diplomas to the graduating students. NCS will look into this issue. Aaron Oaks and Faith Graham would like to attend a SCC meeting. We will invite them to the September 27, 2019 meeting. Subway lunch is planned for Friday, September 27, 2019. Other ideas for lunches are pizza and taco salad. Annual General Meeting is planned for Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at 7:00pm. Next meeting: Friday, September 27, 2019 at 12:30 pm Sara adjourned the meeting at 1:20pm.
