Métis Nation – Saskatchewan and Northwest School Division continue partnership for Michif Language Kindergarten
After the success of the inaugural Michif Language Classroom at Lakeview Elementary School in Meadow Lake during the 2021-2022 school year, Métis Nation – Saskatchewan and Northwest School Division will partner again to continue the program for the 2022-2023 school year.
Michif is an endangered language, only about 640 people in Canada speak Michif according to the 2016 census data. Metis Nation is working hard to ensure it lives on and that the number of speakers increases.
The Michif Kindergarten classroom connects children with Métis culture and language under the guidance of a Michif teacher and Language Keeper. The program aims to promote, protect and preserve Michif language.
Reception to the first year of the program has been overwhelmingly positive.
“Kindergarten Michif was an opportunity to learn and understand our culture, language and traditions. It makes us very proud to see and hear our son recognize Métis culture in his everyday surrounding." Michif Kindergarten Parent.
The Lakeview Michif Kindergarten classroom is one of only seven in Saskatchewan. Registrations are now being accepted for the 2022-2023 school year and details can be found at www.nwsd.ca or by contacting Lakeview Elementary School at 306-236-5810.
