COVID Update - Sept. 13

September 13, 2021

Dear Parents, Caregivers and NWSD Families, covid update sept 13.png

A Public Health Order regarding Mandatory Isolation has been implemented, effective September 13, 2021. The Order allows fully vaccinated persons to be exempted from the requirement to self-isolate; and provides exceptions from self-isolation for school-aged children in order to reduce the societal burden associated with parental or guardian absence from work, and to ensure children can continue in-person learning.

Unvaccinated students who are considered a close contact to a positive COVID-19 case in the school or classroom, may attend school if:

  1. The student does not have or display symptoms of COVID-19; AND
  2. The student must wear a mask while attending school, both indoors and outdoors, and including transport to and from school for 14 days from last exposure.

In this scenario, students are not able to participate in extra-curricular activities during the self-isolation period and the students must also follow the provincial self-isolation directions outside of school hours. However, the student will be allowed to use NWSD transportation to and from school, wearing a mask.

The Public Health Order is available online here: https://www.saskatchewan.ca/-/media/files/coronavirus/public-health-measures/public-health-orders/provincial-order---mandatory-isolation.pdf

In addition to the Public Health Order, we want to remind families of our current guidelines for all those not in self-isolation, outlined in our Return to School Plan:

• Masks are required for all students (PreKindergarten to Grade 12) and staff.

• Masks are required to be worn on buses by all students and staff who ride.

• Masks are required for all visitors to schools.

The school year is just underway and unfortunately COVID-19 is present in many of our communities. Since the start of the school year we have had 57 positive cases connected to our schools. We ask for our families' support in remaining vigilant. If children are sick, please keep them at home.

If you do not wish for your child to follow the requirements, as outlined in our Return to School Plan, or in the Public Health Order, Northwest School Division offers online learning for Kindergarten to Grade 12 through the Northwest Virtual School, and also supports Home-Based education.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. We will continue to keep Northwest School Division families updated and informed as more information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Duane Hauk, Director of Education
