Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As we continue to value the importance of communication between school and home, we have sent this letter regarding an incident that occurred today.

Meadow Lake RCMP notified school division personnel of a situation they were dealing with in the vicinity of several schools at approximately 1:15 pm, and requested Jubilee Elementary, Gateway Middle School, Jonas Samson Middle School, Transition Place Education Centre and Carpenter High School all enter into Hold & Secure. This means that all exterior school doors were locked, and students were not permitted to leave the building, as a precaution. During this time school activity proceeded as normal within the school, and students and staff were safe.

In many cases, students may not have even been aware the school was in Hold & Secure. Our staff do an excellent job prioritizing student safety, without creating panic.

Prior to end of day dismissal, the RCMP provided instructions to our school staff about which area of the community students were to avoid, and staff contacted families of students living in the area to arrange for pick-up. All bus students were able to proceed to their buses, under supervision of staff.

In any emergency situation the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. We strive to provide families with timely updates in an emergency, but we must first ensure the security of our school and coordinate with the appropriate authorities.

We appreciate the assistance of the RCMP in handling the situation today and we are proud of how our students handled themselves during this time.

Sincerely,

Duane Hauk, Director
Northwest School Division
