Safe Schools Plan Parent Package

Updated August 13, 2020

Students, Parents, Caregivers and Staff:

With the support for mask usage and PPE by the province of Saskatchewan, the Chief Medical Health Officer, and Health Canada, the Board of Education has moved to begin the school year at Level 2 of the Safe Schools Plan and mandate the use of non-medical masks in schools.

  • Masks will be required for staff and students in Grades 4 to 12 where physical distancing  cannot be maintained, such as on buses and in high traffic areas. In most circumstances, students in Pre-k to Grade 3 will be encouraged but not required to use masks.
  • All visitors and guests to NWSD schools will be required to wear masks.
  • Students can expect to receive one reusable mask provided by the Division upon their return to classes. We will also have disposable masks for use. Parents are encouraged to provide additional reusable masks for their children if they choose.
We understand that certain medical conditions may prohibit students from wearing mask as stated above. If this is the case, we ask that medical information is provided to the school, by a doctor. Please have your doctor complete the Student Mask Medical Exemption Request.pdf

We would like to reassure students, families, parents and the broader community that Northwest School Division senior staff is working hard with each of our administrators to prepare for re-opening in September and to develop school-specific plans, which will consider the unique needs of each of the students and staff in each of our buildings.

Included with this letter is a document, highlighting some of the safety measures our division will be taking to support the safe re-opening of our schools. We encourage you to also review our FAQ for additional information.

It is important to know that these plans continue to be a work in progress and will continue to change following the guidance and direction of the province.

All school-level plans will follow the government guidelines and Northwest School Division's updated School Re-Open Plan, which now includes mask guidelines. You can view the full plan on our website. NWSD Fall 2020 Re-open Plan.pdf

While NWSD is committed to a re-opening safety plan that meets the requirements of the provincial guidelines and recommendations of the Chief Medical Health Officer to ensure student and staff well-being, we understand that some families will choose not to send their children to school this fall.

To help us better plan and prepare for instruction in September we ask families let us know as soon as possible if their children will not return to school by completing the form linked here. Please complete this form if your child WILL NOT be attending in-person classes on September 1st.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding throughout these unprecedented times.

Sincerely,

Duane Hauk
Director of Education

Dear Parents and Caregivers:Message about Re-open.png

Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we have navigated the COVID-19 pandemic in Saskatchewan, and the move to Supplemental Learning. We know it hasn't been an easy process for families, but we are grateful for your support and understanding as we have had to make changes and adapt to new ways of learning and delivering education.

On June 9, 2020 the Minister of Education, Gordon Wyant, announced that schools would re-open in Saskatchewan as early as September 1. Since then, the government has provided guidelines for school divisions to incorporate into their plans for returning to school. The guidelines are available here.

Our planning is underway and will be finalized in the coming days. The Northwest School Division School Re-open Plan will incorporate the provincial guidance from the Ministry of Education and Public Health, as well as the feedback we received from our students, parents/caregivers, community members and staff in our surveys.

Individual schools in our division will also develop their own plan to address the specific needs of their community and facility.

All plans will be focused around four key measures:

  • Enhanced cleaning procedures
  • Practicing physical/social distancing, where possible
  • Frequent hand-washing or hand sanitizing
  • Staying home if sick

The safety of our students and staff is our top priority as we plan for the return to school.

Once the school division and school plans are finalized we will be in contact with families to share the information.

Please keep in mind that our province is still progressing through the phased re-open plan and some of the guidance for schools may change over the summer. We will strive to keep families updated with the latest information.

If you have questions about the plan to return to school, please contact your child's school.

Sincerely,

Duane Hauk
Director of Education
