Principal’s Report: Geoff McFarlan
· Earth Day will be celebrated with a town clean up on April 21.
· The division will fix the fence along the bus lane and move the bike racks to ensure student safety. The work will be done this summer.
· There is a possibility of the school being painted this summer.
Mural Presentation: Art Students
· Gr 12 art project will be centrally located (above bench across from office.)
· The theme is equality. The hope is to bring a sense of belonging and welcome to all groups so every person can feel supported and can be themselves. It may cause questions to happen so education can be presented.
· This mural is very personal to these students as they are a part of some of the groups being represented.
· There will be 80 people holding hands inside a ribbon. Each person will be unique and have several different symbols representing different groups. Not all symbols will be understood by all people; however, if a person identifies with a certain group and sees the symbol, they will understand it and feel welcome.
Wade to address the SCC on the mural:
SCC opportunity to give thoughts on the project:
· There were several rumors (gay pride, satanic) about what the mural was incorporating. Hopefully, the presentation from the students and discussion during the SCC meeting will put those to rest.
· The mural is to include ALL people.
· There are to be 170-180 different groups represented. The groups will include, but are not limited to, religion, sexuality, race, disability and language.
· Diversity is in the curriculum. The mural is a way to teach and incorporate the curriculum.
· The questions of permanency and prominence was discussed.
· The possibility of a presentation to the entire student body was suggested to help quash rumors.
· Further discussion was had.
Old Business:
· Two Courtyard tables (seating for 8 people) have been ordered, totaling $2830.12. Synergy credit union donated $1900 to the school and will be used for a portion of the cost. Sarah made a motion for the SCC pay $930.12, the remainder of the cost of the tables. Ria 2nd. Motion passed.
· The division will supply grass seed for the courtyard this summer.
· Sarah met with Linda Walde to get advice for the beautification of the exterior of the school. The SCC will meet on May 6 at 6:30 to trim, rake, edge and do a general clean up, as per Linda’s advice.
· The school sign needs more fixing than originally anticipated. More discussion and thoughts are needed.
· School “transparency” is being shared with student activity posts on social media and is being well received.
New Business:
· Subway hot lunch - May 11
· The possibility of hosting a pizza hot lunch will be looked into and decided on.
