May 7 Update for Families

May 07, 2020
supplemental learning update.pngThe Education Response Planning Team, which has been providing direction to school divisions on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Chief Medical Officer, has determined that students will not be returning to classrooms this school year

Northwest School Division will continue to provide meaningful supplemental learning opportunities remotely until the end of June. Supplemental learning is about more than class work, staying engaged with the school also allows students to connect with their peers and supports positive mental health.

We are very proud of our students in these unprecedented times. We know it’s been challenging for families and caregivers to support your child’s learning without the benefit of a physical classroom or school. Thank you sincerely for your efforts. Please know that we are here to help you and that we are in this together.

As students continue to learn remotely, we encourage all of you to continue to work with your teachers in the way that best suits your personal situation. It’s not too late to join in on supplemental learning if you have not already done so. Our school staff are here to support students in taking back their year. If you are interested, please reach out to your school principal.

As we focus now on closing out this year in June, we are also beginning to plan for next year. Our division is working with education sector partners, the Ministries of Education and Health, and the Chief Medical Health Officer, to begin to address how we can deliver education next school year. While we cannot definitively say what next year will look like, we commit to sharing details with you as they become available.

High School Graduation

Graduation is an important milestone and achievement to be celebrated, and we understand the frustration and uncertainty many of our students and families are experiencing about how graduation may look in your community.

Based on the recommendation from the Chief Medical Health Officer and the current public health order, all in-person graduation ceremonies must be postponed. We are working closely with the province and Education Response Planning Team on additional guidance for celebrating graduation.

Our school staff and administrators are working hard to come up with creative solutions, so that all our high school graduates can be appropriately celebrated. Our schools will update with families as plans become finalized.

We remain committed to providing you updates as new direction from the province becomes available, including direction from the Chief Medical Officer as it applies to schools.

Sincerely,

Duane Hauk
Director of Education
