Fair Notice - Assessment of Risk to Others (ARTO)

Northwest School Division is committed to creating and maintaining school environments in which students, staff, parents/guardians/caregivers and others feel safe. Schools cannot ignore any threat of violence.   What is a threat? •    An expression of intent to do harm or act out violently against someone or something •    May be verbal, written, drawn, posted on the Internet, or made by gesture Duty to Report To keep school communities safe and caring, staff, parents/guardians/caregivers, students and community members must report all threat related behaviours to the school principal. What is the purpose of a Student Assessment of Risk to Others (ARTO)? •    To ensure and promote the emotional and physical safety of students, staff, parents, the student making the threat, and others •    To ensure a full understanding of the context of the threat •    To understand the factors that contribute to the individual of concern’s behaviour •    To be proactive in developing an intervention plan that addresses the emotional and physical safety of the individual of concern •    To promote the emotional and physical safety of all What behaviours warrant a Student Assessment of Risk to Others (ARTO) to be initiated? A student Assessment of Risk to Others (ARTO) will be initiated for behaviours including, but not limited to: Verbal/written threats to harm/kill others (‘clear, direct and plausible’) Threats made via social media to harm, kill or cause serious property damage Serious violence or violence with intent to harm and/or kill Indicators of suicidal ideation as relates to fluidity (homicidal/suicidal) Weapon possession (including replicas) Bomb threats (or possession/detonation of devices) Hate incidents motivated by factors including but not limited to: Race, Culture, Religion, and/or Sexual Orientation Sexual intimidation, sextortion, extortion, or assault Domestic, interpersonal, relational violence Gang-related intimidation and violence Fire setting (contextual)   What Parents/Caregivers and Students Need to Know •    Any threat must be reported to the school principal •    Investigation may involve the student services counsellor, the police, or other community agencies •    Investigation may involve locker or personal property searches •    Interviews will be held with the individual of concern and other students or adults who may have information about the threat •    Parents/Caregivers of students who are directly involved will be notified •    Threatening behaviour may result in disciplinary action •    An intervention plan may be developed for the student making the threat and a support plan developed for any individuals targeted by threats   The information in this brochure reflects the thinking and work of J. Changes to Yard Pickup for Busing Services

Subject: Updated Guidelines for Yard Pickup – Fall 2025 Bus TransportationDear Parents and Guardians,We are writing to inform you of updated yard pickup guidelines for school bus transportation, which will come into effect this fall. These updates are part of our continued efforts to ensure student safety and the efficient operation of our bus routes.As outlined in the revised <a href="https://www.nwsd.ca/documents/9ad3c5bc-3ed5-5ce9-bf8e-5c08fa768ac9/Parent%20Handbook.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer" class="editor-link">School Bus Safety Handbook</a>, available on our website, the school division allows for the pick-up and drop-off of students within their yard, provided the following conditions are met:Yard Pickup Criteria:<ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem">There must be adequate space in the yard for the bus to turn around without using reverse gear.</li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem">The turnaround must be maintained and passable at all times, including proper snow removal during winter.</li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem">There must be no obstructions in the driving path or turnaround area.</li></ul>If a yard does not meet these criteria, it does not mean that students will be denied transportation. In such cases, students will be picked up and dropped off at the end of the driveway, rather than within the yard.Parents are encouraged to contact the Transportation Department by July 15 if:<ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem">You would like help determining whether your yard meets the criteria, or</li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem">You need guidance on where a turnaround should be placed.</li></ul>The Transportation Department will be happy to provide that assistance. Walking Together: Celebrating the collaboration between NWSD and Flying Dust First Nation

Over the past two years, a powerful and meaningful partnership has taken root in our school communities - one that is grounded in trust, learning, and reconciliation.Through the Invitational Shared Services Initiative (ISSI), Northwest School Division and Flying Dust First Nation have come together to support Indigenous student success and enrich learning experiences for all students. With a shared focus on land, language, relationships, and culture, this partnership is more than a project - it’s a journey.Supporting Student TransitionsOne of the core goals of the ISSI partnership is to support Grade 8 students transitioning to high school. Many students from Flying Dust and Meadow Lake schools move into Carpenter High School - a big step in their educational journey. Through regular gatherings, school visits, and cultural teachings, students are given the tools and confidence to succeed.Guided by Culture and CommunityCentral to the success of this initiative is Lisa Buffin, Indigenous Cultural Teacher, whose leadership and dedication have been instrumental in coordinating efforts between NWSD and Flying Dust First Nation. Lisa has played a key role in organizing our Land, Language, Relationship, and Culture (LLRC) teachings, bringing together students, staff, and community members for meaningful, culturally grounded experiences.Whether it’s dancing at a round dance, listening to Métis stories, or learning on the land, each gathering helps students connect with their identity and build strong relationships with others in their community.Each lesson follows a guiding theme - such as hope, kinship, courage, or gratitude - rooted in cultural values and traditional teachings that are shared by Elders and Knowledge Keepers.The initiative is also a direct response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action - particularly those related to language revitalization, curriculum development, and creating inclusive learning environments.A Collective EffortThis partnership would not be possible without the incredible contributions of so many people. Caretaking Services

Northwest School Division No. 203 is seeking applications for caretaking services. The successful applicant(s) will receive the service agreement for the supply of caretaking services for each of the following:  Carpenter High School, Meadow Lake, SK Ernie Studer School, Loon Lake, SK Gateway Middle School, Meadow Lake, SK Goodsoil School, Goodsoil, SK Jonas Samson Middle School, Meadow Lake, SK Jubilee Elementary School, Meadow Lake, SK Lakeview Elementary School, Meadow Lake, SK Northwest School Division Office, Meadow Lake, SK The successful applicant will be required to supply the necessary cleaning supplies and equipment in order to provide the necessary services for the school/office buildings and the yards. For the past 13 years, she has served as NWSD’s Deputy Director and Superintendent of Student Support Services, where she played a key role in advancing student success, supporting inclusive education, and fostering collaborative leadership.Before joining senior administration, Jennifer was a respected school leader at St. Walburg School, where she served as Vice-Principal and later Principal. New Board Leadership

The Northwest School Division's Board of Education held its inaugural meeting Wednesday, November 27, marking the start of a new term and setting the stage for continued growth and collaboration within the division.During the meeting, Barb Seymour, representing the City of Meadow Lake, was elected as the new Chair for the Board of Education. With extensive experience and a passion for fostering strong educational outcomes, Seymour brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the role.Patricia Main, from Flying Dust First Nation, was elected as Vice Chair. ASIST Training Registration

NWSD is offering ASIST training on December 5 & 6, 2024 at our Meadow Lake Division Office.The training runs from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm both days. Registration is free for NWSD staff. Parent Update - Use of Cell Phones

August 26, 2024 RE: Provincial Cell Phone Policy Dear Parents and Caregivers, I hope this message finds you well as we prepare for the upcoming school year. I am writing to inform you of an important new policy introduced by the Ministry of Education regarding the use of personal electronic devices, such as cell phones, in K-12 classrooms.Starting in the 2024-2025 school year, all schools within the Northwest School Division will be required to develop and implement school-specific policies that align with this provincial mandate. This policy will limit the use of personal electronic devices during instructional time across all grade levels, from Kindergarten to Grade 12. The intent behind this policy is to create a safe, focused, and effective learning environment for all students, free from the distractions and potential negative impacts of electronic device usage.While the use of these devices will be generally limited, there will be some allowances for students in Grades 9 to 12 if a clear instructional purpose is identified and approved by school administration. Additionally, exceptions will be made for students with medical or additional needs that require the use of a personal electronic device.Each school within our division will be developing its own policy in alignment with these provincial guidelines, and we are committed to ensuring that these policies are communicated clearly to all families. LINC Agreement Signed

NWSD is pleased to share that a new local bargaining agreement with the North West Teachers' Association (NWTA) has been signed. This renewed partnership will strengthen our commitment to supporting teachers across the school division. Thank you to all members of the negotiating teams - The LINC agreement covers locally determined benefits and responsibilities for teachers, such as extra-curricular service, teacher preparation time, before and after school voluntary service, pay for sub teachers, and other non-salary items.
